Summary of St Basil the Great
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, amen. St Basil the Great, born probably in 329 AD and died on the 1st of January, 379 AD, was one of the fathers of the Church and a great saint. As many saints go in their life, he was not always a holy man, he once had worldliness and self-sufficiency in his soul. However, he eventually repented and began to live a life of holiness. He is notable for his struggle against heresy in the Eastern Church. The heresy that was fought was of Arianism, which compromised the doctrine of the Trinity and the Divinity of Christ. However, he was also virtuous in assisting the poor and many other people. He suffered greatly during the struggles against heresy, because of estrangement from and hated by many people. In fact, he received criticism from fellow saints such as Pope St Damasus and St Jerome. He desired friendship with Rome, yet it seems that Rome took distance from him. Yet in such troubling times, he still fought and struggled for the unity of Christianity even when the ones he are trying to unite do not cooperate with him. St Basil the Great, pray for us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, amen.
