God The Supreme Principle of Theology
God, what is He? God
is the Supreme Principle of Theology and all Theology is simply for the
glorification and knowledge of God. God is the Supreme Being and thus the
Supreme Reality, what this means properly is the realm of philosophy. Yet we
accept that philosophical thesis and hold it as the supreme purpose and
principle of our lives which we hold on to with utmost fervor and perseverance.
The faith in the abstract God culminates in the faith in the concrete Person of
Jesus Christ, which continues in the faith in the One, Holy, Catholic, and
Apostolic Church which is seated at Rome. Yet I shall first demonstrate to you
that the faith really is simple.
Faith is Obedience to God
Yet the commandments
of God are so simple. You avoid sin, which is really simple, whatever breaks
the commandment of love for God and love for neighbor is sin. Mortal sins are
confessed to be absolved. You participate in the Sacraments to receive
salvation from God. And in the course of your life, you cooperate with that
grace. You pray to God for gifts and graces to act better in your life. You
love others according to your capacities and according to your abilities and
your calling. Even so, that love for others is so simple. It is simply serving
others with love and humility.
When all is said and
done, you feed others, clothe others, pray for others, make them live better. If
that is done, you seek further understanding and knowledge of God, and you
transmit that to others. That is also love. Perhaps you study about the world,
about what God has created, and communicate that to the world as well. In the
end, eating and biological survival is not the end of our life. Instead it is
to behold the beauty of God in Himself and that which is participated by the
world. That is the foundational essence of life.
What about Theological Theory?
Therein lies the great
question of all theology. If life and the heights of sanctity can be obtained
in ignorance of deep theological knowledge, then what is the purpose of deep
theological knowledge? Yet I say that there is still some sort of Foundational
Theology which every faithful must master. Even though that knowledge is
implicit and not so explicit. For to receive the Sacraments, we must understand
something about them. To pray, we must know at least one thing or two about God
and how to speak to Him in the best manner. However, beyond the basics, is it
necessary?
Certainly not. Advanced
theological knowledge is not necessary for great holiness. In fact, apart from
God, the knowledge of God is useless if not done in great devotion to Him. However,
can theological study sanctify us? Yes, for even simple acts of eating,
drinking, walking, or even doing nothing can be sanctifying and meritorious if
we dedicate and consecrate them to God. Furthermore, the act of theology is
really loving God further. For since the chief aim of any relationship true and
good is the knowledge and goodness of those in relationship, but that God
cannot know more or be better than He already is, then the sole object of the
relationship with God is for us to know God more and be better by receiving
more and more of God’s love and grace.
As such, the act
studying theology is not a mere intellectual satisfaction, it is a growing in
our relationship with God, deepening it and furthering our love for God and our
reception of God’s love. Of course, there are many ways in which studying
theology can directly be practiced in the life of moral virtue. Yet there are
other ways where the knowledge of theology is simply to be enjoyed and to be
appreciated, and this I argue, is the highest form of theology. For the end of
motion cannot be more motion, by which the purpose shall not be attained, but
instead it is something that which cannot move anymore, the eternal love and
knowledge of God. As such, this justifies and explains how most proper to study
theology and how to study anything at all, that is with love for God.
