Commentary on Catechism of the Catholic Church Christ Jesus Mediator and Fullness of Revelation
In the past, God has delivered His revelations through the prophets. Now He has delivered His revelation without any mediation, that is by His Word made flesh, our Lord Jesus Christ. Remember that the Word of God is consubstantial with God Himself. Therefore, God has now delivered Himself in the humanity of Christ to man. In Christ, God has delivered His very self, so there can be no more revelation other than Christ. For Christ is God and God is the Perfection of Revelation, such that when Christ is sent to the world, Revelation is utterly exhausted as there is nothing else that can be said other what Christ is, God.
Albeit Revelation is
complete, it is not fully explicit to the minds of men. Christian faith must
expound, develop, and deepen its understanding of Christ as the supreme Word of
God over time. Throughout the centuries, there have been various private
revelations, which are not additions to Christ, but most usually a practical
guide to help live according to Christ more in a particular time and circumstance.
Those who need private revelation shall be given it and shall be moved to accept
it, but for many others, Christ in public revelation is sufficient and private
revelation is unnecessary. However, when private revelation claims to surpass
what Christ has revealed through His Church, then such revelation cannot be
trusted, along with any religion or sect which base themselves on extraneous
revelation.
