Commentary on Catechism of the Catholic Church Inspiration and Truth of Sacred Scripture
God is the author of Sacred Scripture. All contents of Sacred Scripture are written down under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. In reliance on the faith of the apostolic age, the Church accepts as sacred and canonical all the books of Sacred Scripture on the grounds that they are inspired by the Holy Spirit, that they have God as their author and have been handed on as such to the Church. God inspired the human authors of the sacred books and by that we mean that He used them as instruments of His Word, such that they write down whatever the Lord wants to be written and nothing else.
The Sacred Scriptures
by logical necessity teach the truth, as the author is God Himself who cannot
deceive nor be deceived. It teaches us that truth for the sake of our salvation
which God desires us to see in Sacred Scripture without any error. However,
Sacred Scripture is not the center of the Christian faith, for it is not a
religion of the book, but a religion of the Word of God, which is Christ
Himself. Therefore, we must ask Christ through the Holy Spirit to open our
minds to understand the Sacred Scriptures.
