Ignasian Metaphysics 2 (WIP)

 # God The first metaphysics is ironically the highest metaphysics. Yet this is necessary as a foundation for all of metaphysics, as the foundation is God and the summit is also God. God can be defined as existence. Now since the law of identity is true, existence is existence and that is equivalent to say that existence exists. Since the identity of any object is eternal, then existence is eternal. That which is eternal is also necessary, this makes God eternal and necessary. This will lead then to immutability, simplicity, and finally infinity. As such to say that God exists is actually a tautology, it adds nothing to what we know about God. Or it is something which is true by definition, to say that God exists is to say that God is God. Therefore, the problem of atheism is moot and stupid at best. However, let us discuss the 5 attributes of existence including of existence itself briefly, one paragraph each. The basis of existence being its own object is from the foundational th...

Commentary on Genesis 2

It is said that God rested, technically He did not. There are references which suggest that "rest" is an improper term. However, if we view the Creation narrative from an eschatological perspective, then there will come a time where things are complete and God stops creating, that is the Parousia, the Final Judgement. We know that otherwise Creation is an eternal act of God as God is eternal act. The Garden of Eden is described as pleasure, meaning that it is both literal that there are actual fruits, but it is also allegorical that these fruits represent the abundant graces God gives to the first man, Adam. The tree of Knowledge on the other hand is Christ Himself and thus represents God. You are allowed to consume every grace God gives except for God Himself. We may conclude that God will give the tree to Adam but not now. They must grow. Man is then created in the image of God from the slime of the earth. This means man is of the same material of the created universe. Yet...

Commentary on Genesis 1

God is the Supreme Creator of the universe. He has established all things in its proper order according to His Supreme Wisdom, the divine Logos. He is almighty and He is Power itself. The creation narrative of the Bible is true in an allegorical sense, and thus if science wishes to say anything it cannot go against Sacred Scripture. However, as all things in Scripture, the Scriptural narrative of Creation must have a meaning beyond its obvious and literal meaning. However, what it truly means is beyond me at this point. All I know is that there is one part that has to be absolutely true, man is not evolved but immediately created by God. It may very well be that the basic body of man is a modification of an evolved creature but it is still taken away by God to be new creatures in His image. It is important to remember, God said it is all good, therefore it is all good. God is truth, such that His Word is truth and therefore what He says of anything truly reflects the nature of tha...

Ignasian Metaphysics 1

 # On the Nature of Metaphysics What is metaphysics? Metaphysics is not about physics even if it has the name. Metaphysics is instead about the fundamental nature of reality. The supreme question of metaphysics is what is reality? What is reality ultimately or at its core essence? One may easily answer that reality is simply what we see, but what is that which we see? If we answer the universe and the world, then we have to ask, we have to keep asking until we discover that which satisfies the intellect, the truth of reality. The reason metaphysics is called that way is because there is a central thesis in the whole study of metaphysics that metaphysics is beyond physics, that reality transcends the physical world, something many people deny today. Therefore, metaphysics can be aided by experience but it must also use the supreme absolute reason which all humans have. # On the Method of Metaphysics We have discerned the nature of metaphysics, how are we to conduct metaphysics then?...

Ignasian Study Notes on Introduction of Science of Logic

1. The science of logic is that which cannot have any presuppositions, for the methods are its content. The methods of logic is precisely the content of the science of logic. Therefore, logic must somehow emerge by itself when one has not realized logic, or logic must already be an innate feature of man and man has always been operating by the laws of logic. It seems to me that it is the former which is more true without denying the essential truth of the latter. For we have seen many cases of men denying logic. However, it then shows itself that they are denying logic, not being incapable of logic. It then arises the theory that all man are gifted with logic by God, but some man has chosen to reject that free gift of God and others still embrace it to the fullest. Those who embrace the eternal logic are called saints, and those who reject logic are called wicked and evil men. 2. In every other science other than logic, the matter and the method is different or distinguished. The conte...

PKGK 27

Chapter 1 What Does It All Mean?

What is philosophy? According to the etymology of philosophy, it means love of wisdom. We have a general idea of what love is, but wisdom needs to be clarified further. Wisdom can be considered as the virtue or it can be considered as God Himself as the Supreme Wisdom. The virtue of wisdom is the knowledge of how to properly use knowledge. It is the moral application of facts. If we know a certain fact, what would be the good way of using that fact? That is wisdom. However, as the best way of using any fact is to order them towards God, then in the etymology of philosophy, philosophy is directed towards God and is the love of God. In my personal definition, philosophy is the study of fundamental reality. What is a fundamental reality? Simply put, it is the reality which causes or is the determinant of every other reality. In this case, the fundamental reality is called God. Therefore, philosophy is the study of God and not only that, it is the motion of the intellect towards God, ...

Reliability of Experience

We may sometimes question the reliability of experience to tell us about the outside world. However, there is one truth which destroys all questions. This truth is the truth of God. The infinity of God, which is His Existence-Essence, necessitates that there exists an object outside of God and also outside of our own mind. It necessitates that experience is reliable to tell us about the existence of such objects. Therefore, by the principle of God, experience is reliable to tell us about the existence of other objects.

External Certainty

There seems to be a question of how things can exist outside of our own mind. The answer is actually simple. First we have to consider that God is Infinity, and the principle of Infinity implies necessarily the existence of things outside of that Infinity, and so that includes ourselves and things outside of ourselves. Finally, we seal the case by observing that we possess experiences and distinctions within our experiences. Therefore, it is necessary that the objects of our experience are actually separate and distinct from our own mind. So infinity proves the possibility, and experience proves the actuality of objects existing outside of our own mind.

Basis of Knowledge

What is the basis of knowledge? We must first define knowledge. Knowledge is commonly defined as justified true belief. It means we must believe in it, it is true, and we know why it is true. A belief can be justified in 2 ways, it can be justified by other beliefs or experience. Since experience is self-justifying, then all beliefs terminate its chain of justification in experience. Therefore, we can conclude and declare that the basis of knowledge is experience and reason.

Solutions to Philosophical Problems

In the history of philosophy, most problems have not been solved by humanity. However, they actually do exist in God. We simply have not discovered those solutions. There are several possibilities which also exist. It is possible that the solution has been found but it has not been realized as a solution. It is also possible that they will never be found or realized. Finally, it is possible that they will eventually be revealed by God. What matters however is that there is progress even if there is no real solution. The progress is what matters truly in the perspective of humanity in spite of having no definite end.

Basic Ideas and Tools

In the inquiry of knowledge, when we are distant from the basic ideas, we have many tools to work with. These tools are actually ideas which eventually can be traced back to the basic ideas. So if we want to investigate the basic ideas, we cannot use these tools, as the basis on which these tools are built on is questioned. As such the tools become fewer and fewer as we approach the basic ideas. When we reach the basic idea, we only have 2 tools to progress, that is basic reason and basic experience. Without basic experience, there is nothing to operate on, and without basic reason, there is no tool we can use to operate on the data.

Philosophy and the Investigation of Common Ideas

There are many ideas which we take for granted everyday. To fulfill a certain level of survival and success, the understanding we have of these ideas are sufficient. However, is it truly sufficient to fulfill the highest levels of goodness? In this case, the understanding that we possess might not be the best or optimal understanding to reach the level of goodness that we desire. Therefore, we must investigate these ideas further and this is done through philosophy. As a result it can be concluded that philosophy is needed.

Human Potential for Philosophy

When man is born, he encounters the world and the world fills him with knowledge. However, he does not possess perfect knowledge, this is the cause of suffering. Since man comes from God, he remembers his time with God, and so remembers that there was God. Yet thanks to original sin, the memory is so clouded. Man so decides to pursue knowledge and God, this is the birth of philosophy. All man is cursed and blessed with the desire of God, so all man has the potential to do philosophy. Every man has the potential to love God, but it is up to man to make the decision for or against God, there is no middle path.
