Commentary on Genesis 2

It is said that God rested, technically He did not. There are references which suggest that "rest" is an improper term. However, if we view the Creation narrative from an eschatological perspective, then there will come a time where things are complete and God stops creating, that is the Parousia, the Final Judgement. We know that otherwise Creation is an eternal act of God as God is eternal act. The Garden of Eden is described as pleasure, meaning that it is both literal that there are actual fruits, but it is also allegorical that these fruits represent the abundant graces God gives to the first man, Adam. The tree of Knowledge on the other hand is Christ Himself and thus represents God. You are allowed to consume every grace God gives except for God Himself. We may conclude that God will give the tree to Adam but not now. They must grow.

Man is then created in the image of God from the slime of the earth. This means man is of the same material of the created universe. Yet it also says that man is created with the breath of God, therefore divinity exists within man and that is what animates him. Every living soul in any living creature is of God and is a manifestation of God in the universe. Therefore, man is the supreme synthesis between God and Creation. Man is the second level of the dialectic between God and Creation, with Creation being a synthesis or dialectic between God and nothing.

Water on earth comes from the ground by the power of God. The symbolism is interesting here. Water is the origin of life in scientific theory, thus this reemphasizes that God is the source of the living waters, literal and allegorical. He is the source of all life giving grace and sustenance. When man names the beasts, it is evidence of God giving authority of man by reason to control and govern the earth. Man is now a partner of God and not merely a servant. Man governs with God, though this harmonious plan shall be disrupted temporarily by sin.

Woman comes from man according to the Biblical narrative. This is an allegory for the meanings of man and woman. Man gives and woman receives. The giver always exist prior to the receiver, yet both are equal. As such, in the Most Holy Trinity connected to the Kabbalah, the Father (giver) exists prior to the Son (receiver) and the Father communicates the Holy Spirit to the Son (the communication). However, the ribs means that man and woman are equal as such both have equal dignity but different roles. To be led and to lead do not imply inequal dignity, one can be superior in one respect and yet equal in another respect.

It is written that they are naked but they are not ashamed. It is because they are only physically naked, such that they are not ashamed. Nudity and their bodies are part of their nature. Spiritually they are clothed by the resplendent grace and justice of God, the glory of God. As such in this state of innocence they do not see themselves as they are without God but as they are in union with God. They are not deficient. This will be broken when they sin, such that they see how disgusting they are when apart from God and thus shame came to them. Nudity becomes not a grace but a threat.
