Holy Spirit, The Giver of Life
In Catholic theology, as I understand things, we commit attribution or appropriation of certain Divine Operations to certain Divine Persons. This is how appropriation happens, Creation to the Father, Redemption to the Son, and Sanctification to the Holy Spirit. However, the truth is all Divine Persons do all Divine Operations. The Triune God is One Being, which does all of the Divine Operations. Therefore, the Father creates, redeems, and sanctifies us, the Son creates, redeems, and sanctifies us, and the Holy Spirit creates, redeems, and sanctifies us. It is therefore a heterodox saying to say that the Divine Persons have different Operations as that would violate circumincession or perichoresis.
However, what I shall
write shall follow the tradition of appropriation, not to remind us of the
hidden side of the Holy Spirit, all is laid bare, but instead to remind us of
the precise graces the Triune God gives us in the name of the Holy Spirit. The
Holy Spirit is the giver of life, He is precisely God who brings us the
richness and fullness of life through the various graces He gives us which summits
in sanctifying grace, the union of our soul with Him, or His Divine Indwelling
in our soul which is joined with the wholeness of the Triune God and thus is
what allows us to obtain the beatific vision. However, in the process of
perfecting sanctification, He shall give us various graces that leads us to that
sanctification.
In many ways the
graces that He gives is intellectual, it all is given to the higher faculties or
that of the soul itself, which from there the graces pour down to the body. This
writing is specifically a testimony of that grace. I was once a cultural
Catholic, not understanding and not truly believing in the dogmas of the Faith.
Then I made a true confession, and what happened after that was an opening of
my eyes to the light of God and thus the truths of the Faith. I obtained a great
understanding of the Faith, a great yet simple understanding, and that
understanding grows until now.
What are the evidences
that the Holy Spirit has given me such enlightening graces? The evidence is in
my writings. I do not think that I am the sole author of my writings, for sure
these ideas are generated from my mind, yet I believe that the Holy Spirit has
moved, helped, and graced me to obtain these ideas in my writings. What is the
purpose of my ideas being helped by the Holy Spirit? It is to make these
writings good, that is good for those who would read my writings. For I pray
before I write, and when the writings are received by my audience, they
compliment it, and compliment indicates they have received some goodness from
my writings. The goodness they receive cannot possibly come from me, but they
must have come from the Holy Spirit. As such I simply strive to be a good
channel of the Holy Spirit’s graces to other people.
In many ways, the
graces of the Holy Spirit will only be given to us if we possess the correct
intention and there is only one correct intention, charity for God and charity
for humanity, or our neighbor and ourselves. All graces of the Holy Spirit are
given to us so we can love God and humanity better. So when we pray to God for
graces from the Holy Spirit, we must remind ourselves, for what purpose is our
prayer? Is it for a selfish desire, or is it for the true purpose of charity or
love? For example, I am given intellectual enlightenment by the Holy Spirit in
order to make good writings which can satisfy or make people happy in any way
of happiness. Of course, the greatest hope is that my writings will eventually
lead people to the source of all happiness that is God Himself. However, that
may take some time. As such, this understanding is for the purpose of charity
and love which I am doing in a hopeful sincerity towards others.
A final note, one may
question why am I speaking of all these things, are these not prideful
banterings and ramblings of my self? I would be tempted to agree, but pride
glorifies the self while my writings glorify God. I in no way take full credit
for my works, rather I would attribute them to the Holy Spirit. This writing is
also a way to make a clear record of myself that from now on, I must thank the
Holy Spirit, or the Triune God for that matter, for all things I do with
success. So o Holy Spirit, I thank You for the enlightenment and help that You
have given me such that I can be a channel of Your graces for other people. Let
my works glorify You further until all nations see Your Glory, amen.
