Commentary on Catechism of the Catholic Church The Obedience of Faith
The adequate response to Revelation is faith, by which man completely submits his intellect and will to God. Sacred Scripture calls this submission the obedience of faith. To possess faith is to submit to that which we have heard as we have God as its infallible source. Abraham is the model and the Virgin Mary is the perfect embodiment of this obedience. Abraham’s faith which leads to his deeds, culminating in his willful giving of his son for sacrifice, is counted as righteousness by God. In fact it is what righteousness is, submission of the will to God. The Old Testament is full of witnesses to this faith in God, the Epistle to the Hebrews shows some examples who are approved by God. Yet God gave us something better, the grace of believing in His Son Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.
The Virgin Mary’s
faith is embodied in her 2 greatest acts, that is assenting to the plan of the
Incarnation to be done through her, and when Mary remained with her Son until His
death at the cross. It is Tradition that Mary never doubted her faith in
Christ, her own son. For these reasons all Catholics call Mary blessed among
women and among humanity. A note from my benefactor, that this definition of
faith does not only submit the intellect, but also the will to God. Therefore,
it is obedience in not only belief but in practice to God. We must obey His
commandments and if we are elected, we are guaranteed to obey His commandments
and though we may falter in the journey, in the end we shall persevere in the state
of grace.
