Kemuliaan kepada Bapa, dan Putra, dan Roh Kudus, seperti pada permulaan, sekarang, selalu, dan sepanjang segala abad, amin. Dalam bacaan hari ini, Kristus mengajarkan kita tentang perbuatan baik dan Dia sendiri mencontohkannya kepada kita. Pada bacaan pertama, melalui penulis Surat kepada orang Ibrani, Kristus ingin mengatakan bahwa ada 2 jenis korban yang berkenan kepada Allah, yaitu ucapan-ucapan yang memuliakan Allah dan perbuatan baik atau melaksanakan kehendak Allah. Selain itu Kristus juga mengajarkan kita supaya kita tunduk pada pemimpin-pemimpin kita, yaitu para imam, para uskup, dan Uskup Roma.

Konsep pemimpin atau kegembalaan menjadi poin penting di dalam bacaan-bacaan hari ini. Kristus adalah Gembala Agung kita, dan kita adalah kawanan domba-Nya. Sementara itu dalam Gereja Dia telah menunjuk gembala-gembala lainnya yang menerima kuasa mengajar dan membimbing orang lain sehingga mereka bertanggung jawab atas jiwa para umat Allah. Maka, karena Kristus sendiri yang memberikan kuasa itu kepada para pastor, maka kita wajib menaati para pastor sebagaimana kita menaati Kristus. Namun tentu saja kalau para pastor menyimpang, maka mereka tidak lagi menjadi pastor dan kita tidak wajib menaati mereka.

Dalam Mazmur, Kristus menunjukkan melalui Daud bagaimana Dia adalah gembala yang baik, yang akan selalu memenuhi diri kita dan memuaskan kita. Dialah penghibur dan pelindung kita. Penyedia dan pemimpin kita. Namun, sebagai balasan kepada Allah, kita wajib memuliakan Dia dan berbuat baik sebagai korban penyembahan yang pantas dan layak kepada Allah. Dalam Injil segala hal ini terpenuhi dengan sempurna. Kristus sesungguhnya letih karena perjalanan, tapi karena belas kasih-Nya, Dia tetap mengajar orang-orang yang tercerai berai karena mereka mencari gembala yaitu Kristus sendiri. Para ahli taurat, imam Yahudi, dan orang farisi telah memenuhi tugas mereka, sekarang adalah waktunya bagi Kristus, sang Imam Agung kita, untuk menjadi gembala yang sejati dari umat-Nya.

Apakah perbuatan baik yang paling tinggi menurut bacaan Injil hari ini? Kristus menunjukkan bahwa perbuatan baik yang paling tinggi adalah “mengajar”, tapi apa yang diajarkan? Hal yang diajarkan adalah Injil Kerajaan Allah itu sendiri, yang sesungguhnya adalah Kristus sendiri. Kristus mewartakan tentang diri-Nya sendiri karena Dialah Tuhan Allah yang Esa, dan hanya melalui Dia terjadi keselamatan bagi setiap manusia yang diselamatkan. Maka, kita hendaklah memahami dan mencontoh Kristus bahwa tindakan baik yang paling tinggi adalah mewartakan dan membagikan Kristus kepada setiap orang. Pada saat seseorang sungguh menerima Kristus, bukan hanya kondisi rohaninya yang diubahkan, tapi niscaya rahmat yang awalnya menyentuh jiwa dapat melimpah kepada kondisi jasmani pula. Maka terjadilah transformasi yang menyeluruh dalam diri manusia itu. Namun, bilamana dia tidak pernah mendengar tentang Kristus, bagaimana dia dapat menerima-Nya? Maka adalah kewajiban kita untuk mewartakan Kristus kepada segala bangsa, supaya mereka percaya, menerima Kristus, dan diselamatkan dalam Kristus Yesus. Kemuliaan kepada Bapa, dan Putra, dan Roh Kudus, seperti pada permulaan, sekarang, selalu, dan sepanjang segala abad, amin.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, amen. In today’s reading, Christ teaches us about good works and He demonstrated it to us. In the first reading, through the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews, Christ declares that there are 2 forms of sacrifice pleasing to God, speech which glorifies Him and good works or doing the will of God. Christ also teaches us to obey our leaders, that is our priests, bishops, and the Bishop of Rome.

The concept of leadership or shepherding is an important point in today’s readings. Christ is our Great Shepherd, and we are His flock. At the same time in the Church He has chosen other shepherds which has accepted the authority of teaching and guidance of other people such that they are responsible for the souls of the faithful. Therefore, since Christ Himself ordained these pastors, we must obey them as we obey Christ. However of course if they rebel against Christ, then they are no longer pastors and we no longer are obliged to obey them.

In Psalms, Christ shows through David how He is the good shepherd, which will always fulfill us and satisfy us. He is our comforter and our protector, our provider and our leader. Yet as response to God, we must glorify Him and do good works as a worthy sacrifice of worship which is right and just to God. In the Gospel this is fulfilled perfectly. Christ was in fact tired from the journey, yet by His mercy and love, He still teaches the separated brethren who seek their shepherd which is Christ Himself. The scribes, the Jewish priests, and the pharisees have fulfilled their roles. Now it is time for Christ, our High Priest, to be the true shepherd of His people.

What is the highest good work according to today’s Gospel? Christ shows that the highest work is to “teach”, but what is being taught? What is being taught is the Good News of the Kingdom of God, which is Christ Himself. Christ preaches about Himself as He is the One Lord God and only through Him salvation comes to all of the elect. Therefore, let us understand and follow in the example of Christ that the highest good work is to preach and share Christ to all people. When someone truly accepts Christ, not only his spiritual state is change, but surely the grace which at first touches the soul can overflow into the body and the material affairs. Therefore a comprehensive transformation happens with that person. Yet, if he never hears about Christ, how can he accept Him? Thus it is our duty to preach Christ to all nations, so they may believe, accept Christ, and be saved in Christ Jesus. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, amen.
