Commentary on My Catholic Faith: Holy Scripture, or The Bible
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, amen. Sacred Scripture, or the Bible, is the portion of Supernatural Revelation written down by men. These sacred authors are inspired by God, that is to say their intellect are enlightened and will are moved by God to write only what God wills to be written. As such Sacred Scripture is free from error, or in other words it is infallible. The author of the Bible is God, while the people who wrote them are free rational instruments of God.
The Bible records
religious history and is on that part true. History is presented in
relationship to God and God’s relationship to man, not just mere facts of what
happen. The events described in the Bible are historically true as verified by
archaeology. It has been proven that the writers were eyewitnesses or they had
previous accounts to base their writings upon. The Old Testament is approved by
Christ and the New Testament has not changed over time, the modern versions remain
practically unaltered compared to the oldest copies of Scripture.
The Bible is divided
into the Old Testament recording pre Christian revelation and the New Testament
recording Christian revelation. The Old Testament contains 21 historical books,
7 doctrinal books, and 17 prophetical books. The New Testament contains the 4 historical
Gospels by St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke, and St. John and the historical Acts
of the Apostles by St. Luke, the 21 doctrinal epistles by St Paul, St James, St
Peter, St John, and St Jude, and the prophetical Apocalypse by St. John.
St. Matthew wrote the
Gospel for the Jews first to reveal how the Old Testament was fulfilled in
Christ Jesus in a divine way. St Mark wrote what he heard from St Peter himself
to show that Jesus is truly the Messias and the Son of God. St Luke wrote to
the gentiles to show that Christ came to save everyone, Jew and Gentile. Finally
St John wrote the Gospel to show that Jesus Christ is truly God. Glory be to
the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be, world without end, amen.
