Commentary on My Catholic Faith: The Church and Divine Revelation
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, amen. The Truth of Christ is brought to men by the preaching and teaching of the Apostles and their successors in the Church. It is entirely possible for the Church to live and thrive without Sacred Scripture, yet God gave it to us so it is very important. It is important because of what it contains, that is the Word of God, and so is greatly useful for the teaching of the Faith, yet still it requires Tradition as stated in previous writings.
The Church has always encouraged
the faithful to read Scripture by working on various translations of Scripture.
However, the Church also believes that Scripture must be understood correctly
by correct interpretation and so the Church is the means of that
interpretation. In the end, the Church is the ultimate guardian of divine
revelation. So while it is good and important to study the Bible, it is even
more important to listen to the teachings of the Church so we understand what
the Bible actually says.
Eventually, the truths
of Sacred Tradition has found their way into books as well, such as by the Church
Fathers, the Doctors of the Church, the decrees of Popes and Church councils,
and the Liturgy of the Church as found in the Missal and rituals. However,
Tradition continues to develop until the end of time. As such, we must say that
these writings contain traces of Tradition but not the entirety of Tradition,
as such will be revealed in the end of time. Glory be to the Father, and to the
Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall
be, world without end, amen.
