Divine Will
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and forever shall be, world without end, amen. Before I truly begin my philosophical investigations, I must reason the Will of God, and so this writing is meant to be a deepening of understanding of what Divine Will is in general and also what it is in my particular circumstances. The reason I must reason the Divine Will is I must uncover and understand whether it is truly Divine Will for me to conduct these philosophical investigations under His Grace, or not. In this essay, some fundamental problems surrounding Divine Will shall be made known.
First, what is Divine
Will? When we say God has a Will, we mean there is something within the Divine
Essence or Infinite Existence analogous to our human will. God does not have a
Will separate from His Existence, that would imply composition within God which
contradicts His Essence, that is mere Existence. Then, Divine Will is simply
whatever God does or not do. This is the first aspect of Divine Will, that is
actualization or lack of actualization. When God actualizes, we say it is His
active Will. When God does not actualize, we say it is His permissive Will.
The second aspect of
Divine Will is concordance and contradiction. We say something is aligned with
Divine Will when it is in concordance with Infinite Existence. We say something
is against Divine Will when it is in contradiction with Infinite Existence. Therefore
all moral goodness and virtue is simply practice in alignment with Infinite
Existence, while all sin is totally an offense against Infinite Existence. However,
there is another aspect of Divine Will which for me is interesting.
The third aspect is
the practice of Divine Will. Because Divine Will is literally just the Divine
Essence and thus Infinite Existence, then to say we practice the Will of God is
simply to say we practice God Himself and that is to say we practice Infinite
Existence. What that means is actually not literally having God as an action
that suddenly manifests God in the temporal realm, rather it means in a
particular circumstance, what is the objectively best course of action to take?
The practice of Divine Will is what makes God more manifest within our world,
and thus what makes Existence more manifest. The question of Divine Will is
then this, “What would God be in this particular circumstance?”
The fourth aspect of
Divine Will is the distinction between General Divine Will and Particular
Divine Will. The General Divine Will is what is contained in Public Revelation.
It essentially outlines what God wills for us for every person in every
circumstances. It is what is necessary for us to be saved, that is attain
eternal happiness. Now, God is Infinite Existence but what is within that Infinite
Existence is not really clear other than the Trinity. So it is possible that
God does have a desire, and He desires us to do some things to be saved, which generally
consists in Faith and Works.
Now the General Divine
Will is already detailed enough as it is, yet it is still not enough to dictate
the Particular Divine Will in every circumstance. The Particular Divine Will is
simply the application of the General Divine Will in each particular circumstance
of the human life of each human person. This is revealed either through natural
revelation or private supernatural revelation. Private Revelation is always
about Divine Will in the Particular form, it is for a specific group of people
or for a specific time, as opposed to Public Revelation which is for all people
of all times. The problem of this writing is particularly that of whether my
plans to write up philosophical investigations align with Divine Will or not.
In order to discover that, we must determine first how we can know the Divine
Will.
The Divine Will can be
know through various ways, but those ways are preceeded by only one way, that
is prayer. Well there are other ways to obtain Divine Will than straight up
asking God what He wants for us, but the act of seeking His Will, either by
asking directly or by studying the General Divine Will and applying it to our daily
lives by reasoning, is all prayer. So we must pray to know what is Divine Will.
However, we are not always capable of reasoning out the best possible action to
take every time. So reasoning from the General Will is not always the True Will
for that particular circumstance.
However, reasoning
from the General Will can still lead us to holiness and salvation as what
constitutes as sin or not has been clearly defined by God. This means God grants
us freedom to decide our lives for ourselves within the constraints of His Law.
There is yet a higher level of freedom, which is living in total conformity
with the Will of God, and this can possibly be done by maximizing the practice
of God’s commands in every moment of our lives. As such, within the confines of
natural revelation, it is still possible to use our reasoning to determine what
kind of life would be the holiest life we can ever live and how can we be the
holiest person we can ever be.
With that reasoning, private
revelation is not at all necessary to reveal the best possible course to obtain
maximum possible holiness. However, what if there is a path hidden to us that
is indeed the best possible course to obtain maximum holiness? Then such path
must be revealed to us supernaturally by private revelation from God. And that
can certainly be obtained by prayer, where God shall reveal Himself to us and
instruct us personally how to attain that maximum holiness. However, we must
first walk the natural path first until we can walk the supernatural path.
This means that
whether I received this philosophical investigation task from my own reasoning
or directly from God, as long as it does not contradict the General Will of
God, then I can do what I want. As I forge myself in discipline towards deeper
holiness, if there is a path that God only knows, then He shall reveal it to me.
However, I have Faith in God that the philosophical investigation is tasked
directly by Himself. As He spoke it to me in a direct way and moved me to write
the previous writing titled, “A Dream”. As I am allowed to have my own dreams,
until I have to shift them in concordane with revelation, I will continue to do
so, until the time of change. Therefore, I shall commit to philosophical
investigations next time, in the grace of Christ. Glory be to the Father, and
to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and
forever shall be, world without end, amen.
